Located at the base of the West Maui Mountains is the historic Maui town of Wailuku. This quaint town consists of Central Maui homes with Maui's government offices, antique stores, restaurants, hospitals, boutiques and the Iao Theatre. Many of the new Central Maui condos and residential developments are being built here in the Kehalani community of Central Maui. Home to nearly one third of the island's resident population, Kahului is the main sea port for freight shipping and the inter-island Super Ferry which travels between Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island. The nearest beach is Kanaha Beach County Park located by the Maui airport and is popular among the sea-kayakers, windsurfers, sail-boarders and kite-boarders in the Central Maui area.

The Dunes at Maui Lani, Kahului's Maui golf course, recently opened in 1999 and has many new golf communities currently being built around it. This area of the island use to be submerged beneath the sea but as the volcanoes rose from the ocean the sea receded from the Isthmus and exposed the Central Maui land that we see today. One of the more isolated communities on Maui, Kahakuloa is a small village on the coastline as you travel from Wailuku towards Kapalua. The road here is very narrow, sometimes only for one car, keeping this area some what protected from tourists and commuters. Landmarks in the area are two hill sides called Kahakuloa Head and Ku'u Kahuli'anapa, the Nakelele Blowhole and the Olivine Pools.
